Hollywood star and fashionista Melissa George has invented a device that shortens the trouser leg.
George, 33, of Grey’s Anatomy, and her business partner Kara Harshbarger came up with the snap hem, a plastic device called Hemming My Way, to stop their long pants dragging on the streets of New York.
Harshbarger says: “One day over coffee, Melissa shared her idea for an invention. She had just been to New York City and was annoyed by a problem familiar to all women: her long hem dragging up and down the Big Apple sidewalks. This was 2008: enough is enough! So we brainstormed, drank more coffee, brainstormed, got the jitters, and wondered if we were out of our minds – what did we know about inventing?
She continued: “Melissa stars in movies and Kara has made one. Maybe it was the caffeine, or maybe it was the love of a challenge that had us chomping at the bit. We formed Karamel Productions and dove into the world of plastics, adhesives, manufacturing and sales. Like any new venture, the road is littered with potholes, but we’ve been dedicated to the end goal: when stepping over those holes, we refuse to let our hems drag on the ground!”
George will next week launch a new fashion hub in Melbourne at a celeb-studded mega-party.

Michael Jackson’s mother Katherine is the family “rock” following her son’s death, Kathy Hilton has claimed.
Paris Hilton’s mum Kathy first met Michael when they were both teenagers and the pair remained friends. However, Kathy said she has been left shocked by the King of Pop’s sudden death.
She said: “I have never lost anybody that I went to school with that I was close to in a friendship [that lasted] all these years.”
Michael’s other was recently awarded custody of the singer’s three children Prince Michael, 12, Paris, 11, and Blanket, seven.
Kathy added: “I adore Mrs Jackson. Katherine is the rock. It is like Camp Jackson, all of those kids. All the aunts, the uncles, the children come there. She plays Scrabble with them.
“She loves it. I think that’s what keeps her really young.”

Jude Law reportedly told pregnant model Samantha Burke that his "family comes first in his life".
Jude, 36, has three children with his ex-wife Sadie Frost, 44, and it was recently revealed that model Samantha, 24, is seven months pregnant with his baby.
However Samantha’s mum Lea has said: "This was never planned and Jude didn’t want the baby. It was a total accident. Samantha really wanted to get hold of him, but he hasn’t called once.
"It’s hard to understand why he won’t pick up the phone and see how she’s doing. He’s told Samantha that his family comes first in his life and talks about his children all the time, but we haven’t heard from him and Samantha’s seven months pregnant.
"It’s all a complete mess, to be honest."
Samantha has been at the centre of media reports since it was revealed she was pregnant with Jude’s baby. Reports have come out claiming she is after Jude’s millions and is planning to take him to the cleaners.
But mum Lea said: "Samantha is very upset about it. She likes her privacy and simply doesn’t need all this right now – she’s my daughter, so obviously I’m protective."

Hollywood star Sandra Bullock has revealed she may not have kids with husband Jesse James.
The Speed actress is stepmother to James’s three children, Jesse Jnr, Chandler and Sunny.
But she admits in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that she doesn’t feel the need to bear her own children to have a family with the Monster Garage host.
She told the magazine: “You don’t have to give birth to someone to have a family.
“I’m not going to spend two seconds of my life wishing I had something I don’t.
“It’s hard to do it your way when you hear everyone else telling you to do it their way. I just want people to admit that there’s no one way to live your life.”
But she insists that doesn’t mean she won’t change her mind later, adding: “Of course, I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Bullock married James, the CEO of West Coast Choppers and host of Motorcycle Mania, in July 2005.
