British actors Colin Firth and Hugh Grant have been named among the most inspirational figures in their 50s. According to a survey conducted by High50.com, the pair, both 50, were ranked in second and third places on the list of leading fifty-somethings. Editor Tim Willis said: “Being 50 isn’t about resting on your laurels, in our eyes. “It’s about moving forward, trying something new, adding to your talents and knowledge base.” The website drew up a shortlist, then users voted. Top place went to Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the worldwide web, with designer turned film-maker Tom Ford coming in fourth and musician Nick Cave finishing fifth in the all-male top five. Sex And The City actress Kim Cattrall, artist Grayson Perry, actress Tilda Swinton, journalist Tina Brown, and designer Cath Kidston, made up the rest of the top 10.

Bond star Dame Judi Dench has been awarded one of the art world’s most valuable prizes. The Oscar-winning actress was one of five people to get the new Praemium Imperiale Laureate titles and the names were announced during a recent Japanese-sponsored arts ceremony in London. According to the BBC, the prize is worth around £115,000 and the awards will be given out in a formal ceremony in Tokyo in October this year. She said: “I feel overwhelmed. I’ve been to Japan twice with the RSC [Royal Shakespeare Company] and I made a lot of really good friends. “I call myself a theatre actor. The greatest body of my work is in the theatre and the theatre is the thing I really love the best.” The BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten is the UK adviser for the award and said: “It’s a tremendous honour for Britain, Anish Kapoor and Judi Dench. “It’s hugely important given the contribution Britain makes to the arts and I think people will really see the vibrancy of the UK in cultural terms.”

Actress Sandra Bullock has reportedly “had enough of hiding” and will attend the MTV Movie Awards.

Bullock, 45, last made an appearance at a public event at the Oscars in February and has been staying out of the limelight since news of her husband’s infidelities came to light.

She is set to appear at the MTV Movie Awards on June 6 in Los Angeles to pick up an award.

A source close to the star said to PopEater: “Sandra has had enough of hiding in the shadows while [husband] Jesse has the nerve to sit down on national TV and tell his side of the story.

“She has nothing to be ashamed about and plans to hold her head up high when she attends the awards to accept an MTV honour for entertaining generations of the network’s audiences over the past two decades.”

The award recognised the former ER star for her work on The Good Wife.

Margulies thanked co-stars and writers on the show before she said: “My mother and father call me after every single episode. They’ve been so supportive of me and have such interest in my life and every role I take – except for Snakes On A Plane. They weren’t so proud of that one, but they are proud of this one.”

In The Good Wife she plays Alicia Florrick, the loyal wife of a politician played by Chris Noth of Sex and The City fame. Noth’s character is exposed in a sex and corruption scandal.

Margulies’ gritty role sees her supporting her children while Noth goes to jail. Her six-year role in ER as an embattled and unforgettable nurse was no laughing matter, either.

The elegant 43-year-old brunette said: “I’m not someone who has to go home and slit my wrists after a day’s work because my character did. I love acting because I also love to put on someone else’s shoes and feel what they are feeling. But you have to be able to separate. It’s one of the reasons I don’t live with an actor – life is hard enough.”
